The Great Betrayal – Chapter 2

“It is possible that mankind is on the threshold of a golden age; but, if so, it will be necessary first to slay the dragon that guards the door, and this dragon is religion”
Bertrand Russell quotes (English Logician and Philosopher 1872-1970)

Chapter 2

As the party neared the gates, one of the Pastor’s guardians left his side and placed his hand into a small recess in the left wall. He uttered a command in a language the Pastor had never heard and a blinding light burst out of the recess.
The light seemed to be a liquid of sorts, as it travelled along grooves in the wall and around the perimeter of the gates, filling the once dank tunnel with pure white light. The Pastor had to shield his eyes with his free hand as the light grew more and more intense.
Suddenly the light winked out, and the gates were open.

The angel who opened the door returned to the Pastors side and they proceeded through the open gates. As soon as they had passed, the gates slammed shut with a disturbingly final clang.
The speed at which the guards propelled the Pastor forward made it hard for him to see much of his surroundings, but the tunnel he was in now had a high ceiling and seemed to be the main corridor, as he passed hundreds of doors and passages in a blur. The most disturbing thing was the complete lack of any noise. Everything was silent apart from his own footsteps- the angels were definately making contact with the floor, but their footfalls were silent.

Their destination seemed to be the large oxblood-red portal far in the distance.
The Pastor closed his eyes and let himself be propelled ever forward. Normally in a time like this, he would turn to prayer as a refuge- but who, or what- would hear him? He felt as though he had been abandoned by his God, his Church and everything he once believed in. He felt the foundations he had built his entire adult life on crumbling with each step.

He was shaken from his reverie by the slow creaking of the portal door opening. Now that he saw it, it was more a rust-red like… dried blood?
